The Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University (MAFSU) was formally notified on November 17th, 2000 and was established under the State Act No. 1998 (MAH.XVII of 1998) on December 03rd, 2000 with its headquarter at Nagpur. The University has been carved out of the four Agriculture Universities in the state by transferring five Veterinary Colleges, one Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary & Animal Sciences, one Dairy Technology College and 42 private Lower Education diploma Institutes. Although the University is in its infancy, the constituent Veterinary/Dairy colleges were quite old.
Faculty of lower Education (LE) under MAFSU established on February 10th, 2002 and as per the provision of Act 1998, Chapter VI Recognition, Section 36, 37 & 38 imparting lower education in animal husbandry subjects through private recognised institutes in all over Maharashtra state. Presently two years “Livestock Management & Dairy Production” (LMDP) diploma course in Marathi language for SSC passed candidate’s running through recognised Institutes. The head quarter of LE is at MAFSU, Nagpur and seven regional constituent colleges of this University are coordination centres for controlling activities of lower education diploma course.
